What is Corrugated Packaging?
Corrugated packaging remains the most preferred material for transporting products. Almost every product you see on a shelf requires some form of corrugated material during its journey to the store, from shipping, to packaging, to display.
Corrugated packages contain two primary components: the liner and the medium. Both these components are made of heavy paper called fiber board. The liner is the flat corrugated outer surface of the board. The medium is the paper arches formed in between the linerboard facings.
The most common corrugated package is the regular slotted container. All flaps are the same length, and the two outer flaps meet at the center of the package when closed. Another common package is the die cut box, which is cut into a wider range of shapes and styles.
Advantages of Corrugated Packaging
Safe and Lightweight
Corrugated boxes are lightweight, easy to maneuver, and do not have sharp edges that can hurt workers and damage equipment in transport.
Durability
Corrugated packages are made to withstand continuous movement and transport. Well-designed boxes will provide a great deal of protection for products.
Flexibility
Corrugated packaging can be incredibly flexible, and can be used for both industrial and retail applications. Packages can be made in a large variety of sizes and come in single wall, double wall, or triple wall form for additional strength. There are thousands of possible corrugated packaging formulations.
Customization
Corrugated boxes can be significantly customized to communicate your product’s message and create a unique unboxing experience for customers. With today’s printing capabilities, corrugated cardboard is a common choice for displays and retail packaging. As more and more businesses go direct-to-consumer, custom corrugated packaging has become a central part of the customer experience.
Recyclable
Not only can corrugated packages be recycled again after usage, they are also usually made with a high percentage of recycled paper, like cartons or newspaper. Most corrugated packaging is also made without bleaches or dyes, allowing for more sustainable disposal than material containing contaminants.
Efficiency
Using the right-sized box can help cut down on the amount of material waste and save space during storage and transit. Corrugated boxes are usually rectangular so they can be stacked efficiently, allowing companies to fit more product into fewer vehicles, which ultimately reduces a company’s costs as well as its carbon footprint.
