Out of the box ideas for Father’s Day
All WorkIn collaboration with General Cigar Co., Stephen Gould developed innovative, thematic packaging for the Punch brand’s Father’s Day editions in both 2023 and 2024. These projects highlighted our ability to seamlessly combine creativity and functionality, resulting in packaging that not only safeguards the cigars but also amplifies the brand’s storytelling and deepens consumer engagement.
The Challenge
General Cigar Co. aimed to break away from traditional cigar packaging, seeking unique, memorable, and playful presentations that would stand out in the marketplace and resonate with their target audience. The goal was to reflect the satirical and humorous spirit of the Punch brand while providing practical and visually appealing packaging for the Father’s Day editions.
The Solution
For the 2023 edition, the concept embraced the playful idea of a “dad bod.” The cigars were designed to mimic this, being skinnier at the top and rounder at the bottom. Packaged in cans holding five cigars each, the design leaned into the humor of the theme, with each cigar banded like a necktie to highlight the Father’s Day connection. This creative approach earned a spot in Halfwheel’s top 10 for 2023.
Building on that success, the 2024 edition was inspired by “dad’s home movies.” The packaging resembled a VHS tape, holding ten cigars and featuring playful details like “Beer League” humorously crossed out. This nostalgic and innovative design made for a memorable Father’s Day gift, continuing the brand’s tradition of blending creativity with humor.
The Result
Both the 2023 and 2024 Punch Father’s Day editions received strong praise from both the market and industry critics. The 2023 “Dad Bod” edition stood out for its innovative design, earning the prestigious Halfwheel Award for Best Packaging. Meanwhile, the 2024 VHS tape packaging is already anticipated to be a strong contender for packaging awards. These projects have not only bolstered the Punch brand’s market presence but also showcased our ability to deliver creative, high-quality packaging solutions that resonate with consumers and elevate brand storytelling.
